Chambers News

    11 October 2017

Chambers was delighted to retain its long-held Band 1 position in the Family Law category of the newly published 2017 edition of the Legal 500 directory and to be ranked again as one of the top five sets in the country for Children Law. The new guide saw 23 members of chambers individually recommended and glowing praise for our clerking team – “second to none and the envy of the other chambers”.

    04 October 2017

29 Bedford Row was delighted to take part in the hugely enjoyable Hunters 2017 quiz that raised in excess of £12,000 for Homestart, and even more delighted to win it – producing the full spectrum of correct answers from John Terry through to the Littlest Hobo, and then being closer to the pin on the required tie-break question … despite an answer that did not even make the green. Huge thanks to Hunters for a terrific evening.

    04 September 2017

Chambers is delighted to have been nominated again in the Leading Family Set category at the Chambers UK Bar Awards 2017. Reflective of our continuing position as one of the very top family sets in the country, this is the third time in the last four years that 29 Bedford Row has made the shortlist.

  • Paul Storey QC and Alexa Storey-Rea triumph in EDS IV case

    04 May 2017

Paul Storey QC and Alexa Storey-Rea have triumphed in ensuring their client Craig Stillwell was exonerated from causing any harm to his baby daughter Effie who he was accused of shaking. In the first full judgment in a case of EDS IV being responsible for the illness of the little girl, Paul and Alexa are praised for the work they did to bring about this result. This case has attracted nationwide interest and is a fine example of the expertise our chambers offers. It may come as no surprise to those interested in the scientific and medical areas of care work that Paul and Alexa should once more be in the vanguard and have been involved in this case. It is well known that they were both invited to speak at the Houses of Parliament on the issue of Ehlers Danlos syndrome in 2014 before it came to prominence in the news and following Paul's groundbreaking success in Devon v EB an EDS III case. Among the speakers on that occasion was Dr Anand Saggar who was the genetic expert in Stillwell. Another noteable speaker at that event was Lara Bloom of EDS UK. Paul has now been instrumental in numerous EDS cases and is already very well known in his involvement in cases where there is a potential medical cause for injury that has been alleged to be inflicted. This case also demonstrates the influence that there can be in instructing experienced counsel at an early stage and we are very proud of the commendation that Alexa received from HHJ Venables in this regard.

    04 November 2016

The publication of the latest editions of the two main legal directories has seen 29 Bedford Row reaffirm its position as one of the very top family sets in both the family finance and children law categories. We were again ranked in band 1 for family finance by the Legal 500, with 24 individual recommendations, whilst a record-braking 31 members of chambers (well over half our set) were individually recommended in the newly published Chambers & Partners guide, which saw 2 members of chambers ranked as star individuals in their fields and 8 of our number ranked in band 1. Senior Clerk, James Shortall, commented: “In a year which has seen one of our strongest practitioners go to the High Court bench, it is very pleasing to see that chambers’ reputation remains so high and that the astonishing strength in depth that we have here at 29 Bedford Row has been recognised by so many individual recommendations – 33 across both guides. The future of our set is incredibly bright.”

  • Congratulations DJ Hudd

    01 November 2016

Chambers is delighted to announce that Anne Hudd has been appointed a full-time District Judge on the advice of the Lord Chancellor and the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales. Anne has been appointed to sit on the South Eastern Circuit, based at the Central Family Court with effect from 23rd November 2016. Anne had previously been a highly respected Deputy District Judge since her appointment in 2013 sitting at both the Central Family Court and other courts in the South East.

Anne was called to the Bar in 2000 and was a member of chambers since 2002. She developed a strong matrimonial finance and private law children practice and ran the chambers’ seminar programme for many years. She leaves chambers with the congratulations and very best wishes of all her many friends and colleagues.

    06 October 2016

29 Bedford Row is delighted to announce the appointment of our long-serving Head of Chambers, Nicholas Francis QC, to be a Justice of the High Court, assigned to the Family Division. The appointment of Mr Justice Francis, as he will be known, takes effect from today and is consequential to the retirement of Dame Mary Hogg DBE. The newest judge of the Division was called to the Bar in 1981, took silk in 2002, was appointed a Recorder in 2000 and has sat as a Deputy High Court Judge since 2011. Long recognised as one of the very top financial remedy silks in the country, he served as our Head of Chambers for over 14 years.

    06 October 2016

Leading the tributes to our outgoing Head of Chambers, on the day of his appointment to the High Court bench, will be new Head of Chambers, Philip Cayford QC, who will speak at chambers’ 25th anniversary party at Skylon tonight; close friend and colleague, Patrick Chamberlayne QC, will speak at the swearing-in ceremony for Mr Justice Francis in the Lord Chief Justice’s court this afternoon; and one-time pupil and Nick’s most regular junior, Nick Allen, will speak at the Family Division welcome, taking place in the President’s court tomorrow morning.

    01 October 2016

When, on 17 June 2002, a new silk by the name of Nicholas Francis QC took over as our Head of Chambers, neither he nor we could really have imagined what the next decade and a half would hold. Initially offering to serve for three years, he has been our Head of Chambers for almost fifteen. He took over at a time of crisis in our set’s history and leaves us as both Family Law’s and Legal 500’s family law chambers of the year. 29 Bedford Row’s hard-won but well-deserved reputation as one of the foremost family law sets in the country could not have been achieved without the vision, drive and boundless energy that characterised Nick’s leadership. The debt owed to Nick, individually and collectively, by all at 29 Bedford Row is simply inestimable.

    01 October 2016

29 Bedford Row is delighted to announce the appointment of Philip Cayford QC as our new Head of Chambers with effect from today. He succeeds Nicholas Francis QC in the role. One of the best-known and most popular figures not just at the Family Bar but throughout the world of family law, Philip takes over fresh from his notable victory in the Supreme Court in the well-publicised case of Wyatt v Vince – a success which has cemented his reputation as of the most highly rated family law silks in the country.
